Talking to us about the brief of the design, Srijit says, “This house was designed to be both a place of respite and exhilaration for the clients – Anup Narayanan and Arya A. ![]() This evocative canvas, that comes to life when shadows hit different parts of the home (courtesy sunlight or moonlight), has left a lasting impression in our minds. What we find even more intriguing is that while the shell of this home is so rooted in its context, the open-plan execution of the interiors has a stunning originality to it – it’s brooding, dramatic and contour-rich. The architectural-foundations, as mentioned above, on which this house rests can easily school most of us. And rightly so! The home highlights ingenious usage of locally sourced materials, it reveals a clever application of contextual construction techniques and makes a noteworthy attempt to power the entire house on solar energy. Architect Srijit Srinivas completed the making of this home early this February and the project has already accorded him the World Architecture Community Award (FYI, this is one of the most coveted awards in the architectural world). From afar, the red bricks, grey cement and brick-coloured wooden doors of this 4250sqft duplex bungalow announce well in advance its proud vernacular architecture. Located down a narrow and long site in Trivandrum, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, sits an architectural masterpiece waiting to be experienced. ![]()
